Medium Silos
Medium-capacity on‑farm silos are increasingly used to store grain before sale or livestock use, but effective fumigation with phosphine requires silos to be genuinely gas‑tight and pressure‑tested to Australian Standard AS2628 (five‑minute half‑life). In unsealed silos, required concentrations of 300 ppm for seven days or 200 ppm for ten days cannot be maintained, so pests survive at some life stages and resistance increases; many silos marketed as “sealed” are not gas‑tight and are unsuitable for fumigation.

- 01
8 x 2,200 tonne silos unsealed and prepared for sealing. - 02
Legacy rigid polyurethane spray foam at the roof-to-wall eave and horizontal step-down roof joint has failed; eave voids vary by design and require high flexibility due to differing roof/wall movement. UV exposure and bird damage have degraded the foam. - 03
Original construction mastic has become brittle and is detaching from wall joints; orange staining is from underground water overspray onto walls. - 04
Aeration ducts installed from the lowest point to headspace to distribute fumigant, achieving full coverage with reduced fumigant quantities. - 05
Elevated Work Platforms (EWP) used by the sealing team; where silos are closely spaced, a crane lifted 12 tonnes of EWP access equipment between them. - 06
All joints, bolts, flashings, and penetrations over walls and roof sealed using Glo-Mastic, then prepared for two coats of HRC over the entire surface, including the concrete stud wall, to reduce internal temperature and seal stress. Glo-Mastic HRC - 07
Roof horizontal step-down joint filled with polyurethane mastic and overcoated with Glo-Mastic; the same system applied at roof-to-wall eave joints to accommodate high movement from the overhead inload conveyor. Glo-Mastic - 08
Topcoat application of HRC across the entire surface to lower internal temperatures and pressure on the seals. HRC - 09
Finished seamless Glo-Mastic seal over joints and bolts, with voids between wall cladding and external support posts filled to prevent water pooling; the membrane overcoated with two coats of HRC. Glo-Mastic HRC - 10
Sealing project completed in 8 weeks. 8 x 2000 tonne silos ready for fumigation, whether full or empty.
